Goodbye Zach's Tonsils!

After years of debating, we finally decided it was the best choice to go ahead and get Zach's tonsils out.  His tonsils were HUGE, doctors were always commenting on that and he was getting Strep more and more each year it seemed.  He was also snoring all the time, sleepwalking (and sleep peeing in random places sometimes), and it seemed like he was always tired in the mornings.  He also has just always had a really "full" voice struggled to pronounce certain sounds.  After consulting with our pediatrician multiple times and then the ENT we were convinced that a tonsillectomy could help with all of those things and we decided to go ahead with the surgery.

Zach was a pretty tough guy about it all and never really acted particularly nervous about it.  He is pretty good at being brave.  He did start to get nervous when we went in for the surgery that morning but the nurses put him at ease and he liked having all of the attention on him.  When they took him back, Jon and I both hated the feeling and thoughts of him being back there by himself but the surgery itself only took about 20 min so between putting him under, surgery, and waking up in recovery it was only about an hour that we weren't with him.

The poor guy was really upset when we finally got to see him again.  He was crying and saying how bad his throat hurt and that he hated the anesthesia- that it made him feel like he couldn't breathe and was going to die.  It was kind of heart breaking.  Jon was good and distracted him with some things on his phone.

The next week was rough with lots of pain and his throat hurting so bad he didn't even want to drink water at some points but if he didn't drink it made his throat hurt more.  It was a struggle to even get him to swallow medicine even though he knew that it would help him feel better.  He did enjoy all the ice-cream and popsicles when he was feeling up to actually eating anything.

About a week after his surgery I walked into Zach's room at night to check on him when he was asleep and something felt "off".  I couldn't put my finger on it for a minute but then I realized.  The room was silent!  He wasn't snoring anymore!  Zach has snored every night forever but all of the sudden the snores were gone!  It was crazy!
