Rider Family Update 11/5/19

The last few months have been busy with getting back to school and fall activities!  It's hard to believe it's already November!  We miss you all and hope you all are doing well!

Jon-
Jon has been busy staining our deck the last few weeks!  We decided we wanted it done before winter and had a company come and give us a quote on how much to get it done.  The quote was $1500 and we decided we just couldn't stomach it and Jon convinced himself it wouldn't be too bad to just do it himself.  Well, I think he definitely changed his mind about how bad it was going to be because it took a LOT of time in the freezing weather and wind and seemed endless!  He was finally able to finish it last weekend though and it looks great!  In total, I think we spent like $150 on paint and supplies so we definitely saved a lot!  Jon has also been busy with work and travel and planning audits.  He spent 2 weeks in Brazil back in October.  I think he would say it was pretty enjoyable overall.  He was happy because it was a 3 week trip last year, but after talking to his boss and telling her that he felt like 3 weeks was just too long to be away from his family, they were super nice about cutting his time there down to 2 weeks.  On his weekend there they drove and took a ferry to Ilhabela- an island there that looks really pretty from the pictures!  It was fun but he got lots of bug bites!  Jon's mom was able to come and stay with us for a few days while he was gone.  The kids always love that and it helps distract them from missing dad so much!  This week Jon is back in the Quad Cities working.

Me:
I've been running kids around and trying to keep everything together.  We were convinced by several ward and neighborhood friends that we needed to get season passes to the local Orchard/Pumpkin patch.  It definitely was the best deal if we thought we'd go more than once so we got them!  We went several times, sometimes all, sometimes just me and the kids, and sometimes just me and the two youngest while the others were at school and work.  The kids all had fun enjoying all the fall activities there!
I've been working and practicing a lot to get comfortable teaching my step classes!  I've taught 2 classes and been super nervous for both but both seemed to go ok.  After the last one, I was convinced that I messed up too many times, but ended up getting really good feedback so that was encouraging.  For now it looks like I'll be teaching a couple Saturdays a month and the Fitness Director just asked if I'd split her Thursday class with her and teach every other Thursday.  I really enjoy choreographing the routines and putting the music together!  Hopefully the nerves go away soon!
It's been nice that when Jon isn't traveling, he is able to work from home once in awhile and so that let's me be able to go help with things at the kids' school.  In September I was able to volunteer to run with the 2nd graders for their Jag Jog fundraiser.  It was a 2 mile run- which I figured would be easy- until I got there and the gym teacher tells me I need to stay in front of all the kids the whole time.  Ummmm....they sprinted like the whole time.  I can run, not sprint.  Needless to say I did NOT stay in front the whole time, and was out of breath by the end.  Oh well!
October was busy getting ready for and going to two trunk or treats and then trick or treating, as well as a few Halloween parties, and Zach's birthday!  We went to the Omaha Zoo over Zach's birthday weekend!  It's definitely an awesome zoo just like I remember from that time driving out to Missouri!  It was a little tricky with four young kids because their legs all got tired from walking and there are only 2 stroller seats.  The indoor jungle was, once again, a favorite but we went during bat feeding time and there were bats swooping all over NOT IN CAGES, right next to our heads.  It was ðŸ˜¬ðŸ˜¬.  Overall, pretty good time though :)

Colton:  Colton is doing pretty well with school this year.  I just had his first PTC and it sounds like he still definitely needs reminders to focus and not get off task every now and then but he is overall doing pretty well!  He is very smart and does very well in Math and loves Science and Art.  He got a Grow Your Own Crystals kit from a friend when we moved last year and he reads and re-reads the book all the time, making plans for the experiments and then begging me to do them with him.  I'll be honest, it's not my thing and I do not love it, but I love him and he gets really excited by them :)  He has made a couple of good friends in the neighborhood that he plays with pretty often.

Katie: Katie is also doing really well in school.  She loves everything about it and cries when doctor's appointments make her miss any of it.  She loves to write and is always writing letters, books, and cards for people.  Her collar bone is healing nicely, although at her check-up today the doctor said it would still be another month before she could go back to gymnastics.  She wasn't too happy about that.  She also has lots of friends and loves to play outside.

Zach:  Zach turned FOUR and is getting to be such a big boy!  He is super sweet and also a sneaky little devil at times.  He is not so patiently waiting for the time he can go to school like Katie and Colton but we are trying to have fun here until then.  We go to a toddler music class on Monday mornings with some mom's from both wards here.  Every single time he complains about going but he always has fun once we get there.  Silly kid.  He is also a pretty good boy about going to the childwatch at the gym when I go and helping madi to be happy there too :)

Madi: Madi has a fiery little attitude most of the time.  She wants what she wants and she likes to scream if she doesn't get it or if someone gets in her way.  It's both obnoxious and adorable.  She loves to be outside and is always bringing me her coat to ask me to take her out.  She is obsessed with shoes and loves to wear them all the time, change pairs, and bring everyone in the family their shoes.  She loves all her siblings but she LOVES Zach.  She is so excited to see him every morning and is always hugging and kissing him and sitting and bouncing on him.  Zach is a great sport with her and they just sit and giggle together quite a bit.  I love it :)

Halloween 2019

On Halloween this year, we did nothing.  Haha, sad but true.  Well, we did watch Casper and eat Jimmy Johns...so I guess it wasn't totally nothing.  But the REASON we did nothing on Halloween, is because the rest of the month was full of all the trunk or treats and trick or treating!  Nothing was left for Halloween night!

We had a Ward Trunk or Treat on the 23rd.  There wasn't a dinner before so it was pretty low key but it was also super cold!  Madi wasn't a fan of sitting outside in the cold.  We had a Trunk or Treat at the kids Elementary School on the 25th.  It was a Friday night and the weather was a lot better so we had more light and we were less freezing.  There were also a lot more cars and a lot of cars went all out with decorations.  The kids had a lot of fun at this one and got way too much candy.

In Des Moines area, kids trick or treat on "Beggars Night" which is the night before Halloween.  From what we can gather, it's a combination of a decades old tradition in the area as well as a way to keep kids safe from drunk drivers and older kids partying and playing pranks on the actual Halloween night.  It's a little weird to get used to but I guess it makes sense in some ways.  We just told the kids that we are still calling it Halloween (not Beggars Night) because that's what it is :)  It was pretty cold for trick or treating though!  It had snowed the day before as well as most of that day.  None of it stuck, but it was still pretty cold.  We got the kids dressed up in their costumes and took pictures and then bundled them all in coats, hats, and gloves for trick or treating.  Colton and Zach lasted about 45 minutes before they were cold and wanted to go home.  I took them home and then Katie dragged me back out for another 45 minutes and probably could have kept going if I had let her!  Her stamina when it comes to free candy is pretty incredible :)

Costumes:
This year I was a "mean mom" and told me kids that they needed to pick a costume that we already had for Halloween.  We bought all new costumes last year and we had plenty they could pick from this year so I didn't want to spend a bunch of money we didn't need to.  They actually complained a lot less than I thought they would about it!  Colton would have preferred being a raptor (always), but happily went as batman instead.  Katie went as Anna from Frozen.  Zach's costume we cheated just a little.  He was supposed to go as superman-which we already had a costume for- but a few days before the first Trunk or Treat he came to me with his cute face and puppy eyes and said, "Mom, I really want to be something spooky for Halloween.  Can I please be a ghost?"  How do you say no to that?  I found a piece of white fabric at Walmart for less than $5 and cut a hole for a head and some angles at the bottom and got some cheap face-paint and we made him a ghost.  I justified it as not breaking the "no new costumes rule" because it was super cheap and easy (and because he was too cute :)  Madi went as a bumblebee that Katie wore when she was her age.  She was adorable, of course.

Fall Fun & Broken Collar Bones

Fall is one of my favorite seasons and we have had fun enjoying it!  We've had family visit, visited the local Orchard/Pumpkin Patch a few times, and enjoyed playing outside in the nice weather.

Fall rainstorm

Bike ride to the park with Katie

Jag Jog at the kids' school!  I got to go run with them!

Roasting Marshmallows!

One thing we did NOT enjoy was on September 28, 2019 when Katie fell down the stairs and broke her collar bone.  No fun!!  The poor girl is just so accident prone!  She was in a lot of pain at first but it started to heal quickly and soon she was back to doing most things she was before (even if she technically wasn't supposed to yet).

Katie was bummed that she couldn't fully participate in some of the Fall activities, like going down the slides and jumping on the jumping pillow at the Orchard a few of the times we went, but she made the best of it.  She is a trooper.  Her follow up appointment is in a few days and I think she is pretty much back to normal!  She will be excited to get back to gymnastics and her other activities like PE and riding her bike!  We just made our last visit to the Center Grove Orchard for season and we got to smash up pumpkins with a big hammer!  Katie was able to participate and smash along with us without any pain and go down all of the slides with us!  It was a good day :)

Another thing that happened this Fall was that I became a fitness instructor at Fitness World!  I am now teaching Step Aerobics a few times a month.  It is something I have been thinking about doing for awhile but I just never really thought I actually would.  Somehow, this time, when the opportunity came up, I was out of excuses for why it wouldn't work right now so I decided to push myself to do it!  It is so fun and so hard and so challenging to push myself out of my comfort zone!  I really really enjoy the choreography and feeling like I am accomplishing something and working towards something as an individual.  Being up in front of everyone and trying not to mess up is totally nerve racking and gives me stomach aches like 24 hrs in advance of teaching but I'm hoping that dies down with time and practice! Once I get past the nerves, I think I'll really enjoy it!

Zachary is FOUR!

My little buddy somehow grew up and is now FOUR years old!  And he can even say "FFFOUR" correctly now!  He is getting so big that it makes me want to smile and cry all at the same time!

For Zach's birthday, we celebrated by having some of his friends over on the 18th for an Avengers Birthday Party!  We just did some simple Avengers games and activities, had a picnic inside, and then had spiderman cake and icecream.

The next day was Saturday and we drove to Omaha and spent the day at the Henry Doorly Zoo!  We'd been meaning to go for awhile anyway and so we figured we'd just add it to the birthday festivities.  We had a fun (and tiring) day checking out the zoo, and then we let Zach pick out something from the gift shop for his birthday.  (He picked a stuffed turtle).

On Sunday the 20th, Zach's actual birthday, Zach requested we have sloppy joe's for dinner and donuts for dessert.  We opened presents afterwards and Zach got a new wiggle rider, a puzzle, some transformers, and a few other toys.  He was so excited and loved it all!

At 4, Zach is adorable, sweet, sneaky, mischievous, ridiculous, goofy, fun, and loving kid.  He will do the funniest things, the naughtiest things, and tell the most ridiculous jokes.  He says the most random things.  The other day Jon was laying on the floor and Zach was pushing him with his head, trying to roll him, and all of the sudden he stops and says, "Mom!  Guess what??  My head didn't break open when I was pushing dad!"  Haha, I don't know where these things come from.

A joke he told us in the car one day,  "What did one poop say to the other poop?  I love you."  He definitely loves any joke with poop involved....

Another inappropriate but random comment by Zach- we were talking about how we were going to paint our Halloween pumpkins:
Colton: I'm going to paint Frankenstein riding a shark riding a T-Rex in Outer Space!
Katie: I'm going to paint a princess!
Zach: I'm going to paint my butt. 😮🙈
Seriously!  Where does he come up with this stuff?

I know he is so excited to grow up and go to school like his older siblings, but I think I am going to be sad to lose my little buddy at home with me!  He is such a good big brother to Madi and she is always so excited to see and hug and climb all over him every day :)  He is also so sweet and loving and will frequently say things like, "Mommy, I love you SOOO much!"  or "Mommy I'm so glad you're my mom."  or "You are the best mom in the whole wide world!"  He is a sweetie 💗
