Colton's 12th Birthday!

How is my oldest 12?!?  Every year that passes just feels crazier and crazier.  This year Colton's birthday fell on the same day as the Ankeny Fest parade so he got to celebrate his birthday with a big parade to start the day.  Like Katie, he also opted for an icecream cake from Dairy queen and picked out the decorations for it.  Colton is a bright kid with lots of ideas and a huge capacity for learning new things and figuring things out.  He has been dealt some challenges in life and he works hard to overcome those, even though I know its not always easy for him feeling different or not totally in control of his choices.  We worked this year on putting together a 504 plan for him with the school.  He doesn't like being singled out and treated differently but the very mild adaptations and accommodations we wrote in to help them are there to help him be successful and be his best self.

Colton does not like trying new things unless a trusted friend or sibling does so first  or with him.  He is confident in the things he likes and doesn't like and isn't afraid to stick up for himself or others that he feels protective over.   He is learning that he can do hard things and that every effort counts.  It was fun going to watch him in the 5th grade track and field day in May.  He is not a natural athlete and definitely wasn't the quickest or the strongest but he tried and did his best and I enjoyed watching him!

Colton has two main bet buddies, both of them on our street- Oliver and Cason.  They all like gaming, science, and science fiction types things.  They like to come up with their own comics and stories.  The like to play minecraft and talk about minecraft and their favorite youtubers.  Colton is really only allowed to watch a few channels on youtube but there are some animal videos he enjoys as well as gaming ones.

I took Colton, Cason, and Oliver to the zoo the saturday after Colton's birthday to celeberate.  They had a great time hanging out and looking at the animals. The got a big kick out of the mating tortoises (which were really awkardly loud) and couldn't stop giggling about it.  After the zoo we went to McDonalds.  I'm super grateful he has some good friends to rely on!  They have a fun time together.
