Stop 3 was the Rapid City area of South Dakota. We got a hotel for a couple nights in rapid city and took the kids to see Mt. Rushmore night 1. It was pretty cool to see it in the sunset! The next day we hung out in Rapid City. The two main things we did were Reptile Gardens (a belated birthday present for Colton) and Bear Country- a drive through zoo type place with lots of bears.
Reptile Gardens was cool. Colton was elated to see a komodo dragon and they had a HUGE crocodile named maniac also. We caught a couple of animal shows that were pretty entertaining- one for snakes and the other for gators.
Bear Country had lots of bears just walking around the car. It was neat to see them all so upclose. We also saw a wolf and some elk, moutain goats, and a few others.
The next day we headed out towards our family reunion in Mitchell, South Dakota, but on the way we made a stop at Badlands National Park. Badlands was really neat to see and we did get out and hike around a bit and such but I will say that it was REALLY hot and we were all a bit tired from the crazy week we'd had so far so after a couple of hours we decided to head out. We did get in a hike, and plenty of climbing and walking around in that time, as well as a stop at the visitors center, though!
